(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 06, 2013 ) New York, NY -- According to the latest rumors, Zach Braff will be looking to make his Broadway debut in 2014.
The former Scrub's star will be making his debut in the musical adaptation of the Woody Allen piece “Bullets Over Broadway.” According to the star, the only person more excited than himself is his father.
“If my father loved two things most, it was Woody Allen movies and Broadway musicals,” Braff said by phone from Los Angeles. “When I called my father, I said, ‘Are you sitting down?’ ”
The piece was written by Allen and Douglas McGrath, and allows the continuing struggles of a young playwright. Braff is set to play the protagonist, who was embodied by John Cusack in 1994.
“It’s thrilling,” Braff says. “I keep waking up expecting it to be a dream.”
Susan Stroman, a five-time Tony Award winner, is set to both direct and choreograph the piece. The play is set to begin its performances in March of 2014. It will be held at the St. James Theater. The show will also feature a full orchestra that will play music stemming from the 1920s.
In a way, the piece is taking Braff back to his roots, who played Allen's son in the film “Manhattan Murder Mystery” before he went to Northwestern to study film.
“If you would have asked me a couple months ago ‘What are your dreams as an actor?’ I would have said, ‘I’d love to do a Broadway musical one day and I’d love to work with Woody Allen again.’ When I got the call from Woody and Susan Stroman, my head sort of exploded.”
The remainder of the cast includes Vincent Pastore of the Sopranos, Betsy Wolfe from the Mystery of Edwin Drood, Lenny Wolpe of Drowsy Chaperone, and Helene York from Grease.
