(HomeGarden247.com, August 02, 2013 ) Brooklyn, NY -- Science Fair Winner Proves Silicone Spatula Safer
Chicago, IL (July 11, 2013) – Eighth/ninth-grade Davis Junior High science student Robert Keith Holmes won this summer's All-City Summer Science Fair with a simple experiment proving that Silicone Spatulas are more bacteria resistant than wood or plastic.
"Basically, I just did cultures," said Holmes. "Ms. Slocum helped me and let me use her lab's incubators during the summer. The silicone spatula samples hardly had anything growing on them."
Holmes' experiment was a simple yet thorough variation of a class experiment he and his peers did during the spring, said Jennifer Denise Slocum, Davis Junior High's science teacher.
"This spring, I sent teams of kids around the school to gather samples to culture," said Slocum. "Roberts team found some troubling things growing in the school cafeteria, and this made him start thinking about food safety in general."
Holmes hypothesized that, even with regular washing in scalding, soapy water, wood and plastic spatulas would retain bacteria because of their many cracks and pores.
"You would think the plastic spatulas would sterilize better," said Holmes. "But they don't. I found that bacteria hang around in the tiny cracks and the big crack where the handle joins the spatula head."
Unlike most plastic spatulas, the Kitchen Meister silicone spatulas are one piece. Because they are more flexible and heat resistant than plastic, they don't crack. They also don't have pores like wood, which is the reason silicone spatulas are known to rarely absorb colors or odors.
Holmes used the Kitchen Meister silicone spatulas because he found them for a good price on Amazon.com.
"My parents sent me, Grady (his brother) and Delia (his sister) to camp this summer," said Holmes. "So they didn't have a lot of money to help me with my experiment. But Ms. Slocum says that great science is about method, not money. We got four Kitchen Meister Silicone Spatulas for about $15. They're a bit cheaper than the wooden ones."
Holmes parents are proud of their son's achievement and hope to see him continue science.
"He has more discipline than I did at his age," said Janet Holmes, his mother. "We're so proud of him. His father and I have been talking. We set aside a little piggybank to save up for his next experiment. Jennifer (Slocum) and all the judges say he could go on to the county or even state science fair this year. We think he will. He's such a bright boy. "We're really hoping he can win a scholarship. We know it's early, but a mind like his deserves the best education."
