(HomeGarden247.com, December 11, 2014 ) London, London -- Deciphering an issue that on first hearing, appears to be self-explanatory - Elevated Sports - dwells on the physiological elements of training at this difficult time of the year - rather than just the obvious psychological barriers that are associated with leaving the warmth of one's home to hit the pavements. Andy Smith, the spokesman for Elevated Sports, expands: "extremes of temperature either way are detrimental to performance. The factors particularly relevant to running performance in cold weather are: lactic acid production (which is elevated in cold weather) and a lessened ability for the runner's muscles to contract as effectively as in normal conditions."
It goes without saying, that runners should be adjusting their performance expectations, and training with this in mind. Andy, and the team at Elevated Sports, being experienced runners themselves suggest: "Don't fight it, conditions are worse and are regardless of the time one spends warming up. The issues become more severe to runners that are lighter in weight (thinner) and thus more susceptible to lower muscle and body temperatures."
The team go as far as to say, even atmospheric conditions, such as the drier, colder air which leads to reduced air intake (breathing) capacity will also further inhibit performance. And it is advised carbohydrate levels are increased pre-run as the body is said to fuel up using carbohydrate over fat stores in these conditions.
With all this in mind, the average recreational runner may query if the benefits outweigh the costs here. Andy, insistent that it is, expands: "the goal when training should always be to maximise and increase performance, however under certain conditions, even maintaining levels of fitness (particularly aerobic) can be acceptable. Something for all runners to bear in mind, is that Spring is never too far away, and when it comes, every runner will be glad they put in the work over Winter."
Some things to help the process can be: joining a group of runners to put an external pressure on getting up at dawn, then ensuring to prepare everything the night before - so there are a couple less excuses to tell when the alarm bell rings, finally - planning a nice foam rolling session post-workout can help. Foam Rolling helps ease and relieve the muscles spent and importantly can be carried out in the warm of a home, office or gym.
The Elevated Sports Foam Roller is now available on Amazon, throughout Europe and originally produed for the UK market.
